CAIRO – 27 March 2021: The Cairo governorate’s office said the death toll rose to 9 in a building collapse in Cairo’s Gesr El-Suez district after a recovering a body under the rubble.

Civil protection units are working on removing the rubble and searching for more victims, the governorate said.

A number of 18 injured people left hospital after receiving the required treatment, the governorate said.

The condition of other six injured people is stable, the governorate said, adding that they are still receiving treatment in the hospital.

The Central Operation Room in Cairo governorate received a notification at 3 am on Saturday reporting the collapse of the building near Omar Ibn el-Khattab metro station.

Egypt’s Top Prosecutor Hamada el-Sawi ordered an urgent probe into the collapse.

Cairo Governor Khaled Abdel el-Aal, along with Civil Protection Forces, Ambulance, and security officials headed to the accident site to follow up on operations to rescue people trapped under the rubble.

Governor Abdel Aal ordered forming an engineering committee to inspect adjacent buildings for probable damage.
