Take a few hours out of your weekend to “go green, go local” at the Green Hands Festival, hosted by the American University in Cairo’s (AUC) Green Hands Club.
Running from 2-9pm on Saturday, March 3 at AUC Park and Square, AUC New Cairo, the festival features children's games, musical entertainment, educational activities about the environment and a bazaar of Egyptian-made products. All profits will go toward the club’s project to transform the densely populated Shubra neighborhood into an environmentally friendly area.
A number of environmental NGOs, including Nature Conservation Egypt, Nature Conservation Siwa, and The Solar Decathlon Project, in addition to AUC's Desert Development Centre (DDC), will be at the festival to raise awareness about green projects and technology such as solar panels.
Egyptian designers will be on hand to sell items made from recycled materials, while in the “Karakeeb Corner,” individuals will sell items they no longer need at cheap prices, rather than sending them to a landfill.
Children can burn off their energy on the bungee sling and sumo wrestling game, then enjoy a special muppet show. Singers Mahmoud El Esseily, Ramy Essam, Samo Zein and the Zabaleen band are performing throughout the day.
Tickets are available sold through Green Hands Club members and at Gold's Gym Maadi and Giza for LE 35, and the club is arranging for special transportation to AUC's New Cairo Campus from Maadi, Heliopolis and Mohandiseen.
