New movie releases for April

While action and science fiction dominate the Hollywood releases this month, local productions are taking a rest and waiting in anticipation for an early summer launch in mid May. Currently in post-production for this new season, El-Dealer with Ahmed El-Sakka, Adrenaline with Ghada Abdel-Razek and Kalam Garayed (Newspaper Talk) with Ola Ghanem.

Sci-fi classics of the 1950s like The Blob, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman and The Fly are some of the sources of inspiration for this funny computer generated adventure from DreamWorks.

When Susan (Witherspoon) is exposed to mysterious rays coming from an outer space meteor, she is mysteriously transformed into a giant woman named Ginormica. Her pursuit around the city also uncovers a secret: The American military has been hiding other sinister monsters in its facilities.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

April 29

Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine, tracing the origins of the superpowers of X-Men. After losing his girlfriend, soldier Logan agrees to join a secret program to multiply his human powers. Becoming the rebel known as Wolverine, he escapes his captors only to be hunted down by another group of mutants led by one mysterious Victor Creed (Schreiber) who later on becomes his bitter enemy Sabretooth.

Starring Mickey Rourke, Diane Lane, Thomas Jane, Rosario Dawson and Johnny Knoxville
April 8

Following his Oscar-nomination for The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke takes on this adaptation of the best-selling crime novel by Elmore Leonard (who also wrote Get Shorty). He plays the hitman Armand “The Blackbird” Degas, who blackmails a couple played by Diane Lane and Thomas Jane after they stumble on an extortion plot hatched by his equally crazy partner. Iranian-born Hossein Amini (The Wings of the Dove, Jude) wrote the screenplay.

Wrestler John Cena’s new action vehicle has a plot similar to his 2006 film debut The Marine. Here he plays a police detective who must go through 12 challenging endeavors to save his girlfriend from an ex-con he once put behind bars. Action specialist Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger) directs. et

Fast and Furious

Starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Jordana Brewster and John Ortiz
April 8

The fourth installment of the The Fast and the Furious series has original cast members Diesel and Walker returning after the flop of their other outings. The story picks up when Brian O’Conner (Walker) gets released from prison and teams up with Dominic Toretto (Diesel) to bring down a drug cartel. Full speed chases from the Los Angeles’ street to the Mexican desert ensue.

It’s Alive
Directed by Josef Rusnak
Starring Bijou Phillips, James Murray, Skye Bennett, Raphaël Coleman, Arkie Reece
April 29

Before Josef Rusnak (The sci-fi thriller The Thirteenth Floor) came onboard, Larry Cohen was invited to direct this remake of his own 1974 horror classic that spooked an entire generation. After giving birth to her baby, Lenore (Philips) awakes to discover that all the doctors and the nurses in the hospital were mysteriously slaughtered. Soon, the incident is revealed to be the beginning of her newborn’s love to kill.

The Uninvited

Starring Elizabeth Banks, David Strathairn, Arielle Kebbel and Emily Browning
April 29

The British Guard brothers make their feature length debut with this remake of the 2003 Korean horror film, A Tale of Two Sisters. After surviving the tragic loss of their mother, Anna (Browning), returns home only to discover that her father (Strathairn) is engaged to her mother’s former nurse, Rachel (Banks). When Anna is visited by her mother’s ghost, warning her of Rachel’s intentions, she and her sister Alex (Kebbel) try to convince their father that his current fiancée might be behind the family loss. et
