At A Cinema
A mix of real-life dramas, hilarious comedies and shoot 'em up thrillers
By Sherif Awad

Valkyrie

Directed by Bryan Singer Starring Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branagh, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp and David Schofield January 14

Following the X-Men and Superman films, Bryan Singer returns to the character-driven dramas that he perfected early in his career with The Usual Suspects. This time, he cast Tom Cruise as the real-life German Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg who joined the resistance and plotted an ingenious plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler before the Nazis destroyed Germany and Europe. Although the same film was made twice for American then for German TV, Cruise was attracted to the role after noticing his strong resemblance to Stauffenberg.

Yes Man
Directed by Peyton Reed Starring Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel, Bradley Cooper, Terence Stamp and Rocky Carroll January 7

Based on the memoirs of British author Danny Wallace, this comedy marks the return of Jim Carrey to his popular slapstick routine. He plays Carl Allen, a man who signs up for a self-help program based on one simple principle: Say yes to everything and anything for an entire year. At first, his life turns in amazing and unexpected ways, but he soon discovers that opening up his life to endless possibilities can have drawbacks.

Bride Wars
Directed by Gary Winick Starring Anne Hathaway, Kate Hudson, Candice Bergen, Kristen Johnston and Chris Pratt January 21

In this comedy, Hathaway and Hudson play two best friends who have carefully planned every detail of their respective weddings until a clerical error makes them clash when their wedding dates coincide. They start competing for venues, services and guests once it’s clear that neither will step aside.

RocknRolla
Directed by Guy Ritchie Starring Gerard Butler, Thandie Newton, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jeremy Piven and Tom Wilkinson January 28

British gangster film specialist (Snatch, Revolver) and ex-Mr. Madonna Guy Ritchie comes back to the London underworld with this violent tale of hard cash and flying bullets. When a Russian mobster orchestrates a lucrative real estate scam, everyone in town wants a piece of the score, from unrelenting crime boss Lenny (Wilkinson) to street-smart criminal One Two (Butler), sexy accountant Stella (Newton), and even punk rocker Johnny Quid (Toby Kebbell). But who is kidding who?

Quarantine
Directed by John Erick Dowdle Starring Jennifer Carpenter, Jay Hernandez, Columbus Short and Dania Ramirez January 7

Night of the Living Dead meets 28 Days Later in this horror shocker. TV reporter Angela Vidal (Carpenter) and her cameraman are assigned to spend the night shift in a Los Angeles fire station only to be taken to a small building whose inhabitants have been infected by a mysterious virus. Soon enough, the local authorities quarantine the building and Angela finds herself alone with mysterious beasts in the dark. et

Changeling
Directed by Clint Eastwood Starring Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Jeffrey Donovan, Colm Feore and Michael Kelly January 14

When they starred opposite each other in the thriller In the Line of Fire (1993), Eastwood said that he was more interested in Malkovich as a director. Finally, Eastwood got the chance to direct Malkovich in this film based on real events that took place during the 1920s in Los Angeles when Christine (Jolie) realizes that the child returned to her after his disappearance is not hers. Facing corrupt police officers who influence the public to question her sanity, she desperately hunts for answers, only to be confronted by some shocking revelations.

Passengers
Directed by Rodrigo Garcia Starring Anne Hathaway, Patrick Wilson, David Morse Clea DuVall and Dianne Wiest January 14

In this supernatural thriller a young therapist named Claire (Hathaway) is assigned to help counsel the five survivors of a plane crash. As they share their recollections of the event, which some say include an explosion that the airline claims never happened, Claire develops an attachment to one of the passengers. Just as Claire’s professional relationship with the survivor is blossoming into a romance, the other survivors begin to disappear one by one. Claire becomes suspicious and is determined to uncover the truth, no matter what happens.
