Bling Abroad
Splurge on a few things in Dubai, the world capital of consumer culture
By Hassan Hassan

Few places in the world have as much bling as Dubai — the Gulf’s ostentatious tax-free enclave that’s now a shopping haven for the world’s jet setters. From diamond earrings to platinum pens to designer bags and fast cars, the United Arab Emirates has all the tacky, gaudy and expensive fashion gear you need. Or, don’t need. Let’s be honest, there’s really only one thing you need in Dubai: a credit card. That way you don’t actually feel like you’re wasting — or, um, spending — money and can shop free of your otherwise practical inhibitions. So take our list of flashy accessories and outrageous apparel and head on over to Dubai for a weekend of shop-till-you-drop.Time

Looking for a Rolex Yachtmaster or a Panerai Luminor Marina? Well, you’ll have no problem finding over-the-top timepieces in Dubai. The more diamonds, gold, titanium, or other precious metals they have, the more likely you’ll find them here. There is nothing subtle about the watches on display, but just keep in mind you’re paying for carats, not practicality.

It’s a Man’s World

Gone are the days of men rolling out of bed and throwing on a t-shirt and sandals. They’ve now got just as many accessories to worry about as women, including briefcases, cufflinks, tie clips and pens, among others. Check out the endless selection of these items at places like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Boss, and Mont Blanc, who offer classic and contemporary casual and formal wear. Pick up a Louis Vuitton briefcase, a Mont Blanc pen, Gucci cufflinks and a Zegna suit to complete the outfit.

Mallrats

No vacation in Dubai would be complete without a trip to one of its futuristic shopping malls for some designer goods. In just the last five years, over 15malls have blossomed across the city. One of them — the massive Emirates Mall — is home to famous British department store Harvey Nichols a great place to buy Jimmy Choo sandals, Dior platforms or boots from Guiseppe Zanotti.

Gizmos and Gadgets Aplenty

Take a break from fashion and go shopping for Dubai’s abundance of electronic gadgets — cheaper due to the lack of import tax and of better quality than those available in Egypt. From phones, stereos and laptops to karaoke machines, iPods and cameras, Dubai has all the latest from brands like Sony and Nokia. Nokia’s ‘Morph’ — a flexible cell-phone that can be worn as a bracelet — is the latest of these off-the-wall electronic products and is sure to be all the rage in Dubai for a while. If the designer labels are wearing you down and the sheer vacuity of some of Dubai’s super-malls have you aching for culture, the city also maintains a number of Arab bazaars. Offering everything from veils and fishing nets to carpets and daggers, the old-world souqs are a lot less hectic than Khan El-Khalili — but don’t worry, they take credit cards too. et

Only in Dubai could the standard stretch limo be déclassé. Now you can roll up to the red carpet like you really mean it — in a stretch Hummer limousine.

Mont Blanc men’s accessories.

Unapologetically boxy with serious off-road capacity, it is long, sleek and surprisingly beautiful car inside and out. It’s practically a dance club on wheels, with pulsing green neon lights, a red laser beam and strobe lights gracing the interior. Up to 14 people can fit, with leather sofas on three sides, a wide-screen plasma TV and beautiful mahogany bar equipped with all the accessories but none of the alcohol. The standard drinks list includes soft drinks, juice, and mineral water, but you can bring your own booze. A state-of the art sound system comes stocked with over 10,000 songs. And with the Hummer limo’s smooth driving, you’ll forget you are in such a massive vehicle.

You can rent the Hummer limo (with driver, of course) for an hour (AED 500/ LE 800), or a 10-hour day (AED 3,500/ LE 5,200) any day of the week from Top Limousine. Price includes petrol, soft drinks and insurance. In high season it’s out every day, so call ahead to make sure it’s available.

Not Just the Black Gold

The Gulf is one of the few regions in the world that has gold-specific souqs. With rows and rows of 24-carat gold, Indian-made necklaces, 18-carat bangles and diamond earrings probably worth more than your home, it’s not an exaggeration to say you can find every type of jewelry imaginable; Dubai imports approximately 150 tons of gold every year. Also check out the classic designer pieces, with the latest necklaces, earrings and bracelets from Gucci, Chanel and Dior.
