El-Alsson School (EA) offers co-educational English education and serves Egyptian and expatriate children. Established in 1982, the school is custom-built on a 23,000-square-meter site in Haraniya, in the countryside near the Giza Pyramids. The school offers the Egyptian Ministry of Education curriculum, the British National Curriculum for England leading to GCSE, AS and A-levels and recently the American Middle And High School Diploma.

Teaching staff comprises a mixture of Egyptians and expatriates (mainly British). The school prides itself on ensuring that all staff members are properly qualified and supported.

British Curriculum: In 2000, El-Alsson introduced the British GCSE, AS and A2 (A-level) program, which has grown into a large senior school section of more than 150 students. This enables the school to offer a wide range of subjects. The program has become very popular with both students and parents and examination results have been outstanding — better than the UK average.

For expatriate or Middle Eastern children coming to Egypt from an English curriculum, EA is able to provide a familiar program with a wide range of subjects available, each taught by experienced UK teachers. For native speakers of Arabic, the school includes an Arabic and religions program (Islam or Christianity) in the international section, which meets the requirements of Egyptian state universities. For non-Arabic speakers, there is an Arabic as a foreign language program which can lead to GCSEs.

American Middle and High School: In 2005, the school introduced the American Diploma through grade 10, and will expand in 2007 to grades 6-12. The new school is an exciting development that offers a wide range of extracurricular activities including clubs, sports, theater productions, musicals, concerts, an annual all-school art exhibition at the Opera House, award and graduation ceremonies, an annual Sports Day, the Big Spring Carnival and community and charity work through the school council. At El-Alsson, education is not just academic results.

El-Alsson School is an Egyptian Ministry of Education School, an Edexcel Examination Center, a member of the European Council of International Schools, a member of the British Schools of the Middle East Association and a CITA American High School Diploma Candidate School.

Courtsey American School of Alexandria
The American School of Alexandria

AIS provides its students with an outstanding American college preparatory education, with the option of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program in grades 11 and 12. AIS prides itself on its high educational standards, evidenced by its students’ performance on standardized examinations and their impressive record of university admissions in Egypt, the United States, Canada and elsewhere. Over the past three years, AIS students have a near-perfect record of success in the challenging IB Diploma Program. This success rate places AIS’ IB Diploma Program among the best in the world.

AIS maintains a pleasant and positive educational environment, promoting its students’ love of learning. The school’s atmosphere is American with a distinctly international feel. The majority of the students are Egyptian and the entire school community maintains a profound respect for Egyptian, Arab and Islamic culture.

This year is AIS’ first at its new custom-built campus in New Cairo City, adjacent to the Mubarak Police Academy along the Ring Road in Qattameya. The state-of-the-art, 51,000-square-meter facility includes spacious classrooms, fully equipped science laboratories and computer centers, a three-story library, a two-court air-conditioned gymnasium, an indoor/outdoor swimming pool and an Olympic-size track and soccer pitch.

AIS is fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. It is authorized to offer the full IB Diploma Program by the International Baccalaureate Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. The school’s diploma is recognized by the Egyptian Ministry of Education as equivalent to the Thanaweya Amma. American Schoolof Alexandria

Education today requires that students experience a global view of the world. At the American School of Alexandria, K-12 students are given this opportunity in a variety of ways. The majority of staff members, being from North America, bring with them a broad background of experience teaching in different cultures. Staff specialists bring an expertise in such fields as art, library science, music, counseling, computer technology, science, English as a second language and physical/health education. In addition, a combination of younger and older staff brings an added dimension to learning.

The curriculum is an American model in both content and process. Subjects such as literature, history, sociology, economics, politics, anthropology and world issues provide a diverse perspective on the world today. This is, however, not to the exclusion of Egyptian history, which is also part of the curriculum. Small class sizes allow more teacher-student contact time and in-depth discussion of issues. The library, which is a resource center for daily newspapers, magazines, books, media and internet, brings a worldwide perspective into the school. Research via the internet is also available in two dedicated computer labs. With wireless capabilities throughout the school, the personal laptop computer is fast becoming a standard tool for many students.

Hands-on learning activities and field trips are an integral part of learning. A week of Learning Without Walls (field trips) highlights culture in and out of Egypt. Students have visited places such as Russia, England, the Netherlands, the United States. The opportunity to gain an insight into different cultures has expanded the minds and attitudes of students. Participation in organizations and conferences such as the Model United Nations and Seeds of Peace has given students the opportunity to deepen their understanding of other cultures and world issues. Inter-school athletic competitions have furthered student opportunities to experience cultural diversity.

At the American School of Alexandria students are challenged to develop higher levels of thinking and assume greater responsibility for their learning. Graduates enter university with a global view of education and a desire to continue life-long learning.

International Schools of Egypt – Alexandria

International Schools of Egypt – Alexandria offers two alternative international curriculums to its pupils. The first — the International British School of Alexandria — is based on the British curriculum and the second — École Molière — is based on the French curriculum. Both curriculums are based on the appropriate national curriculum but are adapted to meet the educational needs of students in Egypt and to reflect the trends in international education. The school aims to produce students who have high skill levels in language and are prepared for university placement in any country in the world.

The French and British curriculums are taught by French and British teachers. All the teachers are qualified to teach in their own country and they all have previous experience teaching at home and abroad. They have a shared cultural and educational philosophy that has been developed in the light of the best educational practices from around the world.

The school is located on Agricultural Road outside Alexandria and is surrounded by green fields. This new building is complete with science and computer labs, large classrooms and a spacious outside play area for break times and PE lessons.

Central to the school is the idea that we learn best and most through our own experiences, through hands-on activities and when we understand not just the facts of the matter, but the reasons and underlying rationale and causes for things. It is not enough to be told scientific facts — children must see for themselves and conduct experiments. It is not enough to be told how to add numbers together — children must handle objects, sorting and putting them together to understand concept of number and amount. It is not enough to be told the grammar of language — pupils must speak, listen to and understand language, and learn how to use words in complex ways.

Alongside this, and following the same philosophy, the school develops pupils as people and as citizens. The staff is interested in and supports the students in their entirety, encouraging them to excel in and experience not only academic but also social and spiritual aspects of life. Students are given many opportunities for socializing and being with children of their own and different ages to learn to work together.

Misr AmericanCollege
(Orouba Language Schools, American Division)

The Rashidy family has been in the field of education for over 40 years. Hussein El-Rashidy started the Orouba educational institutions in 1960 with the Orouba Language School in Dokki. The administration’s deep-held belief in quality education and high standards made this school a success, which in turn created a demand for another Orouba Language School in Maadi in 1985.

Believing that every student should be given the choice of a good education from kindergarten to university, in 1996 the Rashidy family was among the first to start a private university in Egypt — Misr International University.

Misr American College (MAC), the American Division of Orouba Language Schools, opened in 2001. It is the family’s latest addition in their quest for educational excellence. The school is situated in Maadi and follows the American curriculum. One of the guiding philosophies of the school is the belief in the development of each student’s maximum potential in his/her own individual strengths. Although the teaching follows the American curriculum and methodologies, religion and the Arabic language are given equal importance.

The mission at MAC is to provide the students with a solid grounding in education and extend the moral doctrine received at home. Education and moral behavior are passed on to the students by dynamic, internationally experienced personnel. The main goal of the school’s teaching and administrative staff is to provide quality education and reduce the burden of education carried by the parents through the use of the most up-to-date teaching methodologies. This ensures that the students will gain the maximum benefit during school hours and allows the students to become successful, cultured and moral contributors to any community, be it local, national or global.

Misr American College is famous for its small class sizes, cultural and musical events, its extensive sports program and highly qualified American and Egyptian staff. The school’s summercamp starts in July this year and will last for five weeks.

New Cairo BritishInternational School

Founded in 1978 as Heliopolis British International School, New Cairo British International School (NCBIS) is a non-selective, non-denominational international school serving Cairo’s international community. Children from three years to 18 years (nursery to year 13) are admitted to the international primary and secondary schools. The Dutch Stream admits children aged 2.5-12 years, after which they enter the international secondary school.

In September 1998, the school relocated from two small villas in Heliopolis to a new campus in the fast developing residential area of New Cairo and re-opened under its current name. It is easily accessible from Heliopolis, Nasr City and Maadi, although the school does have a significant number of students who travel from as far away as Dokki, Zamalek and Sixth of October City.

The school offers caring and high-quality education in a secure environment on its unique campus. It holds high personal and academic expectations for its students and is proud of the varied and challenging learning opportunities it provides to the students.

The educational approach rises out of the best of government and independent education systems, as well as the best practices in international education. Maximum class size is 20 pupils in the primary and secondary schools. The average pupil to teacher ratio is 8:1, which includes additional teaching support staff.

Both British and Dutch NCBIS academic staff are fully qualified and experienced in their fields. All members of the teaching staff have either British or Dutch qualifications (as appropriate) and bring with them a wealth of current experience from the UK/Holland or other international schools. The head of each school has held senior positions in the UK and/or at international schools. Many other teachers have management or curriculum leadership experience in the UK and elsewhere. AMIDEAST Egypt is celebrating fifty years of service to Egypt in 2006. From our offices in Cairo and Alexandria, we administer numerous important education and training programs for Egyptian students and professionals, and we host Education USA Centers through which Egyptians can learn about diverse education opportunities in the United States. In addition, AMIDEAST Egypt works with Americans who wish to study in Egypt.

AMIDEAST Egypt is currently involved in is the Linking Individuals, Knowledge, and Culture (LINC) program. Funded by the US Department of State, for three weeks this summer, AMIDEAST and AYUSA will provide an exchange program with the theme of conflict resolution to Egyptian, Iraqi, and American teenagers aged 15-17. For three weeks during July 2006, Egyptian and Iraqi students will live with American families in the United States, and the American students will live with Egyptian families in Cairo.

AMIDEAST is seeking Egyptian host families for the American students. Egyptian host families will be expected to accept the student into their home as a member of their family. Host families will provide the students with meals and their own beds, and include them in family activities as the LINC program schedule permits.

Volunteering to be a host family helps build understanding and cultural ties between Egypt and the United States, and it is a unique opportunity to improve your family’s English language skills.Home stay recruitment and selection will continue through the end of May 2006, so if you are interested in hosting an American teenager in your home this summer, please contact AMIDEAST Egypt as soon as possible.
