FRENCH SCHOOLS

Lycee International Balzac

Lycee International Balzac opened its doors in September 2001 and is recognized as a French School Abroad by the French Ministry of Education. Teaching not just language but also strictly adhering to the French methods of education, Balzac focuses on bi-culture. Students are taught both Egyptian and French history to experience ‘the other.’ In kindergarten children receive an hour a day of simultaneous Arabic and French tutoring to ensure easy communication and that the kids learn to speak and think in both languages.

Balzac’s mission is to raise inquisitive, open-minded individuals open to all international cultures. Students are taught to analyze, discuss, question, choose and take responsibility for their decisions.

Educational field trips (in Egypt and abroad) are preceded by hours of preparation in class and projects are followed up afterward so students gain the most from their experience. This year, for example, fourth primary students enjoyed a skiing trip to Villard de Lans in France where they learned to ski, posting daily reports on their website.

There are 165 kids enrolled at the school, 72 percent of them Egyptian and only 3 percent French. Students need not come from French-speaking families; extra language courses are mandatory for non-Arabic speakers.

Facilities include swimming pools and tennis courts (players train with SMASH tennis academy). Computers and a library are also available and a hot meal is offered at the main restaurant where students are taught table manners and etiquette. Faculties offered are in partnership with French universities, such as applied languages, which is one of many started up all over the world by the Sorbonne. The faculty aims at strengthening the relationship between education and the marketplace, encouraging foreign language studies and combining education and expertise. It also teaches applied languages in specialized fields of business, international commerce, law and translation.

Tuition is based on the student’s score in the Thanaweya Amma. The higher the score, the less the student pays. Upon graduation, students are awarded both a French and Egyptian degree. Facilities include a multipurpose sports court, and high-tech computer and language labs.

The Modern Academy in Maadi (MAM)

The Modern Academy in Maadi was founded in 1993 and has since grown from a single specialization (computer science) into two distinct colleges, each offering a variety of specializations. Students enroll either in the Computer Science and Management Technology division or the Engineering and Technology division, both fully accredited by the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education.

In 1996 MAM signed an academic agreement of partnership with the University of the District of Columbia to encourage and develop academic programs that will enhance the material, physical and intellectual growth of students, faculty and staff of both institutions. The program currently offers Cairo-based UDC bachelor degrees. Students enrolling in the Modern Academy have the option of joining the UDC/MAM program and receiving an American degree in addition to the Egyptian one (paying tuition for each), after studying a number of complementary courses required for the UDC bachelor degree. Academic staff teaching in the UDC/MAM Program follow regular University of the District of Columbia syllabi, textbooks and other educational materials.
