The 1996 law stipulates that the ruling family will choose a successor within three days of the throne being vacated.
The Omani Defense Council immediately announced that Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said assumed the position of the new Sultan of Oman.

Sisi received on Monday at his residence the Omani Deputy Prime Minister for the Council of Ministers Fahd Bin Mahmud Al Said at Al Alam Palace.
In his second day in the Omani capital, President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi visited the Royal Opera House, the Armed Forces Museum and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.
President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi will head to Muscat for the first time since he took the office, upon an invitation from Sultan of Oman Qaboos bin Said al-Said.
