CAIRO - 2 July 2019: The World Travel and Tourism Council has put Cairo on the list of the top cities that are expected to receive more tourists in the next decade.

Other cities on the list include Delhi, Manila, Bangkok, and Moscow. However, the council recommends that the governments of those countries upgrade the infrastructure needed to cope with such increase.

The information was mentioned in a report broadcast by CNN on Tuesday. The report was about overtourism affecting many travel destinations in Europe. Those started to take measures that would reduce the number of tourists, which have become a burden rather than a benefit.

Oxford dictionary identified in 2018 overtourism as, “An excessive number of tourist visits to a popular destination or attraction, resulting in damage to the local environment and historical sites and in poorer quality of life for residents.”

CNN reported that 36 percent of the 1.4 billion international tourism trip that took place in 2018 had as destination one of the top 300 popular cities on the planet. That trend is estimated to continue to rise. Yet, other cities are speculated to join the list of the most popular travel destinations soon.

The cities that have begun to develop infrastructure to absorb the rise in the number of tourists, while mitigating impact on residents and the local environment, consist of Amsterdam, Bali, Edinburgh, Rome, Venice, Barcelona, Santorini, Bruge, and Machu Picchu.
