Canada updates travel advice on Egypt to 2nd category

CAIRO – 2 May 2019: The Canadian government updated travel advice for its citizens, asking them to exercise a high security caution while travelling to Egypt after being avoided for non-essential travel, said Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Thursday.

Over the past few years, Egypt was in the third category of “Avoid non-essential travel,” said the Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid in the statement, noting that the update was made due to Egypt’s improving security situation.

As per the updated travel advice, Suez Canal and Ismailia governorates were removed from the highly-risked areas in Egypt. Meanwhile, the authorities are still asking their citizens to avoid traveling to Sinai, except for Sharm El Sheikh Resort, and avoid travelling to the Western desert and Libyan border area, Abu Zeid said.

“The update of the travel advice reflects the effectiveness of the measures taken by Egypt over the past years to bring stability and combat terrorism,” said Abu Zeid, adding that this would contribute to recovering Canadian tourism to Egypt and increasing investment flows to the country.
