Elmermah – Mahmoud Al Hawary

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt - 21 July 2017 : In a traditional musical ceremony that is one of Upper Egypt’s gatherings that best presents the persona of its people, horses start it off with a dance.

It’s called Elmermah, a kind of competition that is well known and spread throughout Upper Egypt. It is believed that the winning horse brings good luck to its owner and the horse that fails brings bad luck to the household.

People gather from different countries all around Upper Egypt for this Elmermah competition. To prepare for this meeting, owners tend to feed their horses well months ahead of time. They put really beautiful strings all over the horses and get beautifully dressed themselves in traditional clothes. Its history has been keeping itself alive through generations.

Make sure you ask for the next Elmermah competition next time you visit Luxor or Aswan.

Thanks to the talented photographer Mahmoud Al Hawary.
