PARIS, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Goalkeeper Alphonse Areola has signed a contract extension with Paris Saint-Germain that will keep him in the French capital until 2023, the French club said on Thursday.

The 25-year-old France international has found his first team appearances limited this season by the arrival of veteran Italian Gianluigi Buffon but he has committed himself to the Ligue 1 leaders rather than look elsewhere.

"It was very important for me to continue my career and my progress here at Paris Saint-Germain," Areola told the club's website. "This club is not just where I've trained, it's in my heart."

Areola, who enjoyed brief spells at Lens, Bastia and Villareal in Spain, has won two Ligue 1 titles (2013, 2018), two French Cups (2017, 2018), two League Cups (2017, 2018) and two Trophees des champions (2016, 2017) with PSG. (Reporting by Andrew Downie; editing by Martyn Herman)
