CAIRO – 25 October 2018: Al-Ahly handball team defeated Gabon’s phoenix 28-20 on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at the African Handball Champions League.

The competition draw put Al-Ahly in Group A alongside Mali’s USFAS Bamako, Cameroon’s FAB Yaoundé, Gabon’s phoenix and the host team Red Star from Ivory Coast.

The team has had an amazing run at the group stage, achieving four victories out of four games to finish the group stage as group leaders.

“It is the most important competition for us and we are ready to fight for the title. We wish to win the title as it would be a great motivation for us this season,” Al-Ahly goalkeeper, Hady Refaat, told Al-Ahly official website on Wednesday.

Al-Ahly players hope to achieve their sixth title in the history of the competition, narrowing the gap with Algerian club, GS Pétroliers, that has a record of 11 titles.

“We had great games at the group stage but we know that the competition will get tougher in the next stages,” Al-Ahly winger, Mohamed Ibrahim, said on Wednesday.

The quarter final stage starts on Thursday, Oct. 25.
