CAIRO – 12 July 2018: France national team manager, Didier Deschamps, led “Les Blues” to their third World Cup final in history after defeating Belgium 1-0 on Tuesday night.

The man who leads the French side since 2012 will write a new chapter in the French football history if he manages to win the trophy.

Deschamps, who had a stunning career as a player on club and international levels, achieved many successes with clubs and he hopes to find the same success with the national team.

The manager, known as the water-carrier, started his managerial career with Monaco and built a squad that achieved the French League Cup in 2003; a year later, he led them to the UEFA Champions League Final when they lost to FC Porto.

Deschamps’ time with Monaco came to an end in 2005 and he was named Juventus manager in 2006 to rescue the team from a dark fate after the Italian giants were relegated to the second division after “Calciopoli” match fixing scandal.

The French could not reject a call from the team that he represented as a player between 1994 and 1999.

Deschamps completed his mission with the club known as the “Old Lady” and they sealed promotion to first division after achieving the second division title; then he decided to leave the team.

Two years later, Deschamps was appointed as Marseille manager. The club has a special place in Deschamps’ heart as the club witnesses his first major successes with the game. Achieving the UEFA Champions League title in 1993 was the highlight of these successes.

Since Deschamps and his teammates have lifted the French League trophy in 1993, Marseille could not achieve the title for more than 17 years, so they bet on Deschamps to bring the title home, and that is exactly what he did when he achieved the title in his first season with the club.

After three successful years in the south of France with Marseille, the French Football Federation assigned Deschamps to rebuild a new generation for France.

Deschamps needed two years to build a squad of young players like Antoine Griezmann, Raphaël Varane, Paul Pogba and Olivier Giroud.

France had a stunning run at the 2014 World Cup but was eliminated from the quarter finals, losing to the tournament champions, Germany.

Two years later, he was so close to win the EUROS at home like he did as a player in 2000 but they lost the final 1-0 to Portugal.

In 2018, with the squad he built, France is at the final again, and on Sunday they have the chance to be the world Champions again.

“The Water Carrier” experienced the World Cup final in 1998 when he captained the French side that won their first World Cup title ever and till now he is the only French captain to lift the World Cup. But, on Sunday, Deschamps hopes the current captain, Hugo Lloris, to lift the trophy in Moscow like he did in Saint-Denis.

If France wins the title, Deschamps will be the third footballer to achieve the World Cup as a player and a manager after Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer.
