CAIRO – 12 June 2018: Argentina Football Association President, Claudio Tabia, revealed on Monday that they hope to finish the World Cup at top four.
“Being in the top four is a positive goal,” Tabia told TyC Sports.
Argentina players seek to end 32 years run without silverware and achieve the third World Cup title in the history of their nation.
Argentina hopes for a better luck in Russia after losing 1990 and 2014 World Cup finals against Germany.
Asked about Lionel Messi’s importance to the national team, he said “He gives a lot to Argentine soccer. Let's face it; the growth we have in the AFA is because we have the best player in the world."
Messi announced retirement from international football after losing the 2016 Copa America Final but he returned to save his national team's chances to reach the World Cup.
Argentina arrived in Russia on June 9 to start their final preparations for the World Cup.
The World Cup draw put Argentina in Group D alongside Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria and they will open their participation on Saturday June 16 against Iceland.
