CAIRO – 11 June 2018: Portuguese youngster winger, Goncalo Guedes, is ready to participate at his first major tournament with Portugal first team in Russia. The player is happy to be in the same team alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
“He's the best in the world and he's always at the very top. It is very important [to have Cristiano] for everyone in the team,” Guedes told Marca.
Five time Ballon d’ Or winner, Ronaldo, led Portugal to achieve the UEFA EURO 2016 in France. It was the first time in Portugal's history to win a major tournament title.
Guedes added “He's key for the whole squad and always helps everyone else; without a doubt he is the reference point for our team and we all trust that he can take us very far."
Portuguese fans hope to be the third nation in history after Germany in 1974 and Spain in 2010 to win the World Cup after achieving the European Championship.
Despite having Ronaldo, Guedes believes that they are not the favorites to win the title. He said “we aren't favorites despite our desire to win. There are other teams who are much stronger and with strong leagues, which helps the national team a lot.”
Guedes has had a stunning season with Valencia that earned him a spot at Portugal squad at the World Cup.
