CAIRO – 5 May 2018: Al-Masry coach and former Egypt national team striker Hossam Hassan has been invited by FIFA to attend the opening game of the 2018 World Cup between Saudi Arabia and the host nation, Russia, on June 14.

Hassan received the invitation as he is considered one of the best Egyptian and African players in history.

This invitation came in recognition of the great role played by Hassan during his career in football. He was given the title of “Dean of World Players” in 2001, in addition to having been a historic player, with 69 goals for the national team in 176 international matches played between 1985 and 2006.

FIFA also invited Egyptian footballer Ahmed Hossam “Mido”, who expressed his happiness on his official Twitter account.

“I am happy to be invited by FIFA to represent Egypt at the World Cup opening ceremony in Russia,” Mido tweeted on Wednesday.

Many players have been invited to attend the event, including Pele, Maradona, Ronaldo Nazario, Jorge Campos, Romario, Van Basten, Oliver Kahn and David Beckham.

Egypt qualified to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, ending 28 years of absence, as they last played in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

The World Cup draw put Egypt in Group A, alongside Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Egypt will play their first game in the group stage against the South American team, Uruguay, on Friday, June 15, before facing Russia on Tuesday, June 19.

Egypt will end their participation in the group stage against their Arab rivals, Saudi Arabia, on Monday, June 25.
