CAIRO – 26 April 2018: Derby County defeated Cardiff City 3-1 at home on Tuesday night in the EFL Championship to delay Cardiff’s route to win a direct qualification to the Premier League.

Cardiff dominated the first half and opened the score through a screamer by Callum Paterson to end the first half 1-0.

The second half was completely different, as Cardiff’s defensive mistakes were decisive and allowed their opponents to return in the game.

Derby County striker Cameron Jerome, who represented Cardiff City between 2004 and 2006, equalized the score after a silly mistake from Cardiff’s defense.

Cardiff’s defensive mistakes continued and Andre Wisdom cut the ball from Cardiff’s defense inside the box and provided an assist to Matěj Vydra, who added the second goal for the hosts.

Jerome punished his former team when he scored the third goal that secured victory for Derby County.

Cardiff City stopped at 85 points, but they are still in second place, one point ahead of the third-placed Fulham and four points ahead of the fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Cardiff will seal promotion to the league if they win their remaining two games against Hull City and Reading.

The battle between the three teams to win the second direct qualification to the Premier League is expected to continue to the last game.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have already won the first direct qualification spot to the Premier League, as they are leading the league table with 98 points.

The team that wins second place will win the direct qualification, while the other two teams will play in the play-offs with the teams that will win the fifth and the sixth places.

Middlesbrough, Derby County, Millwal, Brentford Preston, Bristol City and Sheffield United are fighting to win the fifth and the sixth places.
