CAIRO – 7 March 2018: Zamalek lost 2-1 to Ethiopia’s Welayta Dicha on Wednesday in the CAF Confederation Cup first round played at Hawassa International Stadium.

Welayta Dicha opened the score after 16 minutes with a strike by Bezabeh Meleyo that surprised Zamalek’s goalkeeper, Ahmed El Shennawi, who failed to save it.

After the goal, Zamalek players created many chances to equalize the score until Emad Fathy made the score 1-1 after dribbling the Ethiopian goalkeeper to end the first half 1-1.

In the second half, Emad Fathi led Zamalek’s attempts to score the second goal, but the Ethiopian defense blocked all Zamalek’s chances.

Mahmoud Alaa had a chance to score Zamalek’s second goal when he received the ball at the opponent’s box, but his shot missed the goal.

Welayta Dicha depended on counter attacks to achieve the victory and managed to score the second goal 15 minutes before the final whistle by Yared Dawit to end the game 2-1 for Welayta Dicha.

The second leg is scheduled for March 18 at Suez Stadium. Zamalek needs a 1-0 victory to secure their qualification to the next round.
