CAIRO – 4 January 2017: Lyon Dominican striker, Mariano Diaz expects his former club Real Madrid to defeat France’s Paris Saint Germain when they meet in round 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

“Madrid are the favorite as they are the defending champions," Mariano told Marca.

Mariano, 24, is a Real Madrid academy product. He moved to Lyon last summer after he failed to earn a place at Real Madrid’s first team.

Mariano spoke about his time at the French League with Lyon, he said “It's a very physical league, more so than Spain, it's more direct football but there is a lot of competition."

Mariano shined this season with Lyon. He scored 14 goals including 13 goals in the league and he has formed a great partnership with Nabil Fekir and Memphis Depay.

Mariano has shared Madrid’s dressing room with Karim Benzema for two years and he believes that the player does not deserve the criticism he received in recent weeks. He said, "Benzema has other qualities; he links with others very well and he has a good eye for goals, he simply isn't having good luck at this moment."
