CAIRO – 30 December 2017: Al-Ahly defeated Zamalek on Saturday 3-2 on sets to win the Handball Federation Cup for the third consecutive time. The game was played at the Suez Canal club halls in Ismailia.

The regular time ended with a 25-25 draw and the game went to five sets to decide the winner.

Al-Ahly qualified to the final after defeating Smouha 29-25 in the semi-finals, while Zamalek defeated 6th October Club 31-28.

The teams participated in the Handball Federation Cup without their international players, who were training at the time with the national team for the African Men's Handball Championship in Gabon.

Egypt, the reigning champion, hopes to win their seventh title in the competition, having participated 21 times.

The draw held on November 3, 2017 in Libreville put Egypt in Group B alongside Angola, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Nigeria.

Gabon hosted the competition between January 17 and 27, 2017. The top three teams in the tournament will qualify to 2019 World Men's Handball Championships in Denmark and Germany.
