CAIRO – 11 December 2017: Former Real Madrid player Jorge Valdano stated that he believes Cristiano Ronaldo’s ego has a good impact on the player’s performance with his team.

“Cristiano has the most valuable ego in the history of football — a man that has extraordinary confidence in himself, which has given him an incredible capacity to overcome adversity,” Valdano told the Spanish radio on Monday.

Ronaldo was crowned his fifth Ballon D’ Or on Thursday, and he stated after the ceremony that he is the best player in history, erupting a wave of criticism against the player.

Valdano commented on the criticism against Ronaldo, saying, “some people misunderstand ego and think it is an excess of confidence, but with Cristiano it means that he works each week, which has incredible value, as it means he is able to compete with a genius and even has the same number of Ballon d'Ors.”

Ronaldo led Real Madrid to win three Champions League titles, two Spanish League titles, two Spanish Cup titles and two FIFA Club World Cup titles.

Real Madrid was drawn with Paris St. Germain at the UEFA Champions League’s round of 16. Real Madrid fans hope Ronaldo’s ego will help his team win the game.
