CAIRO – 7 December 2017: Only three teams will be eligible to meet Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16 draw on Monday in Nyon, Switzerland.
Chelsea qualified to the Champions League round of 16 after placing second in their group behind AS Roma, so they will meet one of the eight teams who topped their group.
The eight group leaders are Spain’s Barcelona, Turkey’s Besiktas, France’s Paris Saint Germain, Italy’s Roma and four teams from England, namely, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.
The Champions League rules state that teams from the same group or the same country cannot be drawn against each other in the round of 16, so Chelsea will not be drawn against their group leader, Roma or any of the four aforementioned English teams.
Because of this, Chelsea can only play against Barcelona, Paris Saint Germain or Besiktas.
Chelsea hopes for a merciful draw and avoid the title contenders, PSG and Barcelona, aiming to be drawn against Besiktas.
