CAIRO – 30 October 2017: Before the season, Ahmed Elmohamady had two goals coming into the new campaign. “I wanted to get to the World Cup and win promotion,” he said.

“Now the first one is done with Egypt; the second one must be achieved with the club,” he added.

“Villa is a big club that needs to be in the Premier League. In Egypt, everyone knows Aston Villa. It’s a massive club and deserves to be in the Premier League,” the defender stated.

“After the game, the fans celebrated like crazy. There were 80,000 people in the stadium and millions outside. This group that has taken the country to the World Cup has taken the country onto a different level,” he continued.

“We can’t wait to go a World Cup, because this generation we have so many players who should be playing at major tournaments like this,” Elmohamady said.

He said it was a “big disappointment” when the national team failed to reach the World Cup over and over. He added that he experienced the same feelings as a player in the 2014 qualifiers, when Egypt lost to Ghana in the play-offs.

“That’s what made this one so special. I had felt the pain of missing out last time, so it made this one all the better. It’s been a fantastic experience knowing that we’re going there after this season finishes with Villa,” Elmohamady said.
