CAIRO - 24 August 2017: Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger supports Wayne Rooney on his decision to retire from playing for England during Wenger’s press conference on Thursday.

“I think it is the right thing, he has given a lot to England and I believe that he is at a stage in his career where he has to focus on the club if he wants to play regularly,” Wenger told press.

Rooney announced his international retirement after 14 years representing his national team.

Wenger praised Rooney’s career with England, saying “he has been a great contribution for England and what he has done is absolutely remarkable. He is the last of a great generation.”

England manager Gareth Southgate spoke about Wayne Rooney’s decision. He told press “[Rooney’s] form has been excellent and I was definitely thinking about including him in the squad. We talked for about half-an-hour, but he feels a sense of loyalty to Everton, his new club."

Wayne Rooney is England’s all time top scorer with 53 goals.
