17 August 2017: Everton announced on Wednesday that Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson signed a 5-year contract with the club from Swansea City for a club record of $58 million.

“This is an ambitious club and it is clear we are moving in a really good direction. The most important thing is that this team keeps winning games and climbing the table - and does that throughout the season,” the 27-year-old said to Everton’s website after signing his contract.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman is happy to sign one of the best players in the league. He said, “I’m really happy; he was one of the key players we wanted to bring to Everton. That’s because of his quality first and foremost, and his experience in the Premier League; in my opinion, in his position, he is one of the best in the Premier League.”

Sigurdsson spent most of his career playing in England, having played for Reading, Tottenham Hotspurs and Swansea City, where he shined and attracted many big clubs’ eyes.

Sigurdsson spoke about his ambition with Everton, saying, “For myself, I would like to score as many goals as possible and create as many goals for my teammates as I can. These are my targets.”

Sigurdsson played 37 games with Swansea City in the Premier League last year, scoring seven goals to help the club avoid relegation last year.
