Local artisans will showcase their craftsmanship, including hand-blown glass and silver inlays, during the Sultan Qaitbay’s Fair in the historic City of the Dead district in Cairo.

The fair will be Friday, December 11 from 4 to 8pm, and is part of the European Union funded project ‘Outside In: The Art of Inclusion.'

The fair is an opportunity for local artisans - who have been preserving their traditional craftsmanship over the years - to showcase and sell products like brass, silver jewelry, mother-of-pearl inlays, turned-wood furniture and more. The fair will also feature pieces by contemporary artists in various media.

The event seeks to enhance art and culture accessibility within the City of the Dead.

The hawd of Sultan Qaitbay opened last July after restoration, contributing to sustainability in the local economy by providing a permanent showroom where craftsmen can display their products on a rotational basis. The restoration was financed mainly by the EU at a cost of some 50,000 Euros, as well as by a contribution of 31,450 Euros from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Restoration was completed by the Cairo-based ARCHiNOS in cooperation with the Ministry of Antiquities.
