CAIRO – 2 October 2017: Plan International Egypt honored on Monday Abnaa al-Ghad Foundation’s girls football team for winning sixth place in the Homeless World Cup for children.

The tournament took place at Oslo, Norway, from August 29 to September 5, witnessing the participation of 72 teams from 52 countries.

“The victory is a source of pride for everyone, especially that the Egyptian team was the only Arab one participating in the tournament,” said Mudasser Siddiqui, country director of Plan, an international organization fighting for children’s rights, according to a press release.

“Our participation with Abnaa al-Ghad has succeeded in empowering girls and proving that if given the opportunity, they can achieve numerous accomplishments and become a model to follow.”

The Egyptian children’s participation in the tournament came as part of Plan’s “Edmegona” (Arabic for “include us”) project, which was in collaboration with civil society organizations, and funded by the Swedish Development Agency to eliminate violence against children.

“Our participation in the World Cup for Homeless Children goes beyond sports competitions; it is an honorable representation of Egypt in the international arena,” stated Hanna Abul-Ghar, president and founder of Abnaa al-Ghad Foundation.

The 15th edition of the Homeless World Cup took place in Oslo’s iconic Rådhusplassen, which is a square located between Oslo City Hall and the Oslofjord in Vika. The Cup gathered over 500 players.
