CAIRO – 20 July 2017: Egypt as a country has diversity in religions; there are Muslims, Christians, and Jews. Most of the population is Muslim, then comes afterwards Christianity (which is 20 percent of the population) and Jews, who are not many but still exist in the country.

According to Egyptian Streets, Magda Haroun, The head of the Jewish community in Egypt, is married to a catholic man and her two daughters are Muslims. They are living a peaceful life with each other.

"I taught my daughters to respect human beings for who they are. We celebrate all the religious occasions; we celebrate Jewish occasions with my mother, we attend the prayers at the church on Christmas Eve, and we celebrate Ramadan as well,” Haroun said in her interview to Al-Hurra TV.

This is the kind of diversity that shows how Egyptians used to be in the 70s. They were open-minded, open to any religion and they did not have any discrimination against each other.

Egypt needs more samples of this kind of diversity in families and they need to accept that religion is something no one should interfere with. Parents should give the opportunity for their kids to choose their own religion based on what they study and read.
