CAIRO - 14 May 2019: Rapporteur of the National Population Council Amr Hassan told Egypt Today that Egypt is among the top countries in terms of population growth expected to take place between 2018 and 2050.

Egypt ranks seventh with an estimated increase of 69.5 million followed by the United States with a rise of 61.6 million. The top six are India (308.8 million), Nigeria (214.7 million), Democratic Congo (131.6 million), Pakistan (106 million), Ethiopia (83.4 million) and Tanzania (79 million).

Hassan says that the Egyptian and German populations were respectively 23.5 million and 71.5 million in 1955. However, the growth in Egypt was seven times that of Germany. The population increased in Egypt by 75 million to become 98.5 million. In Germany, the population rose by just 11 million to become 82.5 million.

Unlike Egypt, Germany ranks second among the top eight countries that will experience a slow increase in population. Those are China (49.9 million), Japan (24.7 million), Russia (9.4 million), Ukraine (7.3 million), Romania (4.4 million), Poland (4.4 million), Germany (3.7 million), and Thailand (3.6 million).

The official attributes the huge increase of the Egyptian population over the years to child marriage, the desire to create large families and to have male children, and the lack of planning for the future.
