CAIRO – 8 December 2017: In a strange casting move, Deadpool and Green Lantern star Ryan Reynolds will be the voice of Pikachu from the Pokémon franchise in an upcoming live-action film adaptation of the “Detective Pikachu” video game.

Rob Letterman of “Goosebumps” (2015) will direct the film, which is slated to begin shooting in London by January. The plot follows Detective Pikachu’s efforts to help rescue a child’s kidnapped parent. The film will also star Justice Smith from the upcoming “

Jurassic World

: Evolution” and Kathryn Newton from “Big Little Lies”.

Pokémon began as a Japanese video-game for handheld devices in 1998, which eventually spawned an entire franchise of an animated series, card-game and numerous game installments. The basic premise involves collecting creatures known as “Pokémon”, and pitting them in fights or trading them with others.

The character of Detective Pikachu comes from a 2016 video-game spinoff, and features the beloved Pokémon icon Pikachu as a mystery solving detective.
