CAIRO – 21 November 2017: November 21 is the birthday of Icelandic music queen Björk. With her haunting, unique music and outrageous yet highly aesthetic fashion sense, Björk has proven herself an unforgettable talent to all those lucky enough to see her.

Born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1965, Björk Guðmundsdóttir has been singing since she was 11 years old. She grew up alongside seven siblings under a hippie mother, who taught her children to love nature and music. This inspired her to pursue a career in music as early she could. By the time she was a teenager, Björk was touring with several short-lived punk bands before settling down with the band Kukl. She would later form the band “The Sugarcubes” with several of Kukl’s ex-members in 1986.
Serving as the lead vocalist, Björk helped propel the band to cult fame in the UK and USA with the release of their first album, “Life's Too Good” in 1988.

“The Sugarcubes” disbanded in 1992, but Björk was only just getting started. In 1993, she moved to London and released Debut, her first international solo album, departing from the punk sound of “The Sugarcubes”, drawing from a wide range of musical influences. It was an instant hit, selling over 3 million copies worldwide. As if that wasn’t enough, she would quickly garner further success with her next album, “Post” in 1995.

By 2001, Björk starred in her first movie by director by Lars von Trier called“Dancer in the Dark,” in which she both starred and composed the soundtrack. Björk portrayed the naïve young mother Selma Jezkova, who travelled to the USA in 1964, with her son.

Hoping to save enough money to save him and herself from a hereditary condition that would eventually cause her to go blind, and of which she showed early symptoms. The film won the Cannes Film Festival“Palm d'Or Award,” and Björk received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.

Björk performed at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece with her song “Oceania” from her album “Medúlla.” She later assisted her homeland financially by contributing to the Icelandic government’s fund to invest in ecologically responsible businesses.

In 2010, he received the Polar Music Prize for lifetime achievement by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. Her upcoming album, “Utopia” is set to be released on November 24, with a message of hope and optimism in a time of great political tension and change.
