CAIRO - 21 November 2017: The wreckage of three ships, dating back to the Roman era were discovered during the excavations of the Egyptian mission in cooperation with the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology at the Eastern Port of Alexandria, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mostafa Al Waziry announced.

In a statement by the Ministry of Antiquities on Tuesday, Waziry added that the mission succeeded in discovering a royal head dating back to the same era, three gold coins, from the era of Emperor Octavius Augustus in the Gulf of Abuquir and a boat made of lead for the god Osiris in the sunken city of Heracleion city in the Gulf of Abuquir.

Meanwhile, Director of Central Department of Underwater Antiquities Ossama El Nahas said the wreckage of the three discovered ships indicates that the Eastern Port maybe hide several undiscovered monuments underwater, especially since a ship was discovered in the same area in 1998.

He added that the search indicate that a fourth ship is likely to be found in the next period, as the mission managed to find large wooden planks during its current period.
