CAIRO - 13 October 2017: Egyptologist Zahi Hawass on Friday refuted claims fanned by the UK Daily Express on the presence of a "secret city" and tunnels under the Sphinx.

Speaking to MENA, Hawass stressed that such allegations have no scientific basis.

Earlier, the UK paper quoted Malcolm Hutton and Gerry Cannon as believing the Sphinx which sits on the sands on the Giza Plateau in front of the Great Pyramids could be the gateway to a labyrinth of tunnels and passages and a whole “underground metropolis”.
