CAIRO - 04 October 2017: Goethe Institute celebrates the German Unity Day by screening "Good Bye Lenin" on October 3.

In celebration of German Unity Day the Goethe Institute, located in Mesaha Square in Dokki, will screen the comic movie "Good Bye Lenin" at 7:00 p.m., subtitled in Arabic. The two-hour movie is directed by Wolfgang Becker and first premiered in cinema in 2003.

The movie narrates a story in Berlin in the autumn of 1989. Alex Kerner is a young man whose mother is in a coma after suffering a heart attack and thus misses the fall of the Berlin Wall. Alex’s mother wakes up in the summer of 1990, and the doctor confirms that any excitement would endanger her life.

Accordingly, Alex finds himself forced to hide the news of the end of the Socialist Unity Party in Germany, and he and his friends pretend that the GDR still exists. It is a smart comedy and was the most successful German film of 2003.

Wolfgang Becker studied history and American studies at the Free University in Berlin.

He followed this with a job at a sound studio in 1980 and then began studies at the German Film and Television Academy. He started working as a freelance cameraman in 1983 and graduated from the Academy in 1986. Becker won the Student Academy Award in 1988, as well as the Golden Leopard at the Locarno International Film Festival.
