CAIRO – 27 July 2017: A planned exhibition for the in-progress Louvre Abu Dhabi museum will be a complete recreation of a room designed by Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, a famous French art deco designer active during post WWI France.

The room was originally designed to be an apartment for Harold Harmsworth, the first Viscount Rothermere, who founded the Daily Mail Newspaper with his brother.

Art Deco was wildly popular between the 1920s and 30s, a bold artistic movement combining geometric patterns, exotic cultural motifs and figures out of a painting to create a striking new art form, which represented optimism and hope for the future after war.

The Ruhlmann conservation project will involve both the complete reconstruction and restoration of the room, which will require transporting over 100 pieces by airplane to Abu Dhabi. The project is headed by Museum curator Juliette Singer. The National quotes her main motivation behind the undertaking;

“We need to do something that will not just allow us to show people how beautiful the room is, but to allow the audience to understand what art deco is, not just for France, but for the whole world.”
