CAIRO - 9 July 2018: Egypt can be self-sufficient in natural gas in light of the vast potentials it possesses which qualify it to be a regional energy hub, spokesman for the Petroleum Ministry Hamdi abdel Aziz said Monday.

He underlined the importance of the new gas well that was discovered by Eni Italian company in Faghour field west of Melieha area in Western Desert, the second well to be discovered in the same gas field.

He said the daily production of the new well is estimated at 5,000 barrels which make it more important than the first well with a daily production of 2,300 barrels.

He attributed the new discovery to the use of new technological methods and new geological concepts.

He said 27 public tenders were held to encourage global companies to pump new investments in the western desert.

In 2015, Eni discovered Zohr gas field, the biggest gas field in the Mediterranean, with an estimated production of 30 trillion cubic feet.
