CAIRO – 11 July 2017: The value of electricity exports reached $2.6 million in the first quarter of 2017, according to statistics released by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) on Tuesday.

The report showed that this value represented a decline in the volume of the sector’s exports compared to $12.1 million in Q1 of 2016.

Egypt’s exports of electricity were directed to Jordon during the above period at a total value of $12.1 million, according to the foreign trade quarterly bulletin.

CAPMAS pinpointed that Egypt had not imported electricity in Q1 of 2017.

Recently, the Ministry of Electricity announced new electricity tariffs, with price increases ranging between 15-36 percent depending on the consumption bracket.

Coinciding with the heat wave experienced over the past weeks, an official from the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) has said that electricity plants have recorded the highest usage level in the history of natural gas’ usage in Egypt.

Last week, the fuel usage levels in the electricity plants reached 119 million cubic meters per day (4.2 billion cubic feet per day), representing 82 percent of the domestic production of gas and around 65 percent of consumable gas (both domestically produced and imported).
