CAIRO, 21 October 2019: The State Information Service (SIS) said Monday President Abdel Fattah El Sisi's visit to Russia this week opens new important horizons for relations between the two countries particularly at the level of bilateral and regional cooperation.

The Egyptian leader's visit is going to be his fifth to Russia since his first visit as Minister of Defense in 2014 and the 12th meeting with President Vladimir Putin over this period, a report by SIS said.

President Sisi's visit to Russia is mainly for holding the Russian-African summit, as President Sisi currently chairs the African Union, which will be attended by African leaders and heads of major African organizations. The two-day summit to be held in Sochi will include the signing of several agreements that aim at improving the lives of Africans and establishing peace.

As for Egyptian-Russian relations, the report said Russia is one of Egypt's largest trade partners as trade between them witnessed a substantial growth in 2018 hitting around 7.66 billion dollars. Egypt's exports to Russia increased by 4.2% in 2018 registering around 526.4 million dollars, compared with 505.6 million dollars in 2017, the report added.

The report noted an increase in Egypt's exports to Russia which include agricultural crops, industrial products particularly pharmaceutical ones, foodstuffs and chemicals.

Egypt plans to increase exports to reduce the large trade deficit between the two countries.

The two leaders will tackle a number of regional issues especially related to the Gulf region, Syria, Libya and Yemen.

Egyptian-Russian historical relations flourished in the 1950s and the 60s but they date back to much earlier, the report added.
