CAIRO - 10 February 2019: As the 32nd African Union Summit has as theme refugees and displaced persons, it was inevitable that speakers at the opening session discuss armed conflicts and possible solutions.

Secretary General of the League of Arab States Mohamed Aboul Gheit Africa and the Arab World experienced armed conflicts that resulted in humanitarian crises on a wide scope such as the refugees crisis. “I request that both coordinate on the issues of migration and refugees,” Aboul Gheit added.

“Libya is a place were both worlds meet. We need to support the nation-state in Libya, political solutions, and elections,” Aboul Gheit stressed.

The Arab League secretary general called for African countries to support the International Quartet Committee on Libya having a UN representation; South Sudan factions to achieve what they agreed upon in Khartoum; silencing the gun initiative by 2020; and countries fighting against Boko Haram.

Aboul Gheit expressed his confidence in Sisi’s performance as chair of the AU and that he would accomplish remarkable achievements.

Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres said that the 1969 Convention on refugees protection was unique. “Diplomacy for peace at the UN have started to give rise to results. The ceasefire in Libya is still at place despite challenges. It is time to push for the political process among Libyan factions,” Guterres added.

“The process of peacekeeping is used in areas where there is no peace to be kept. Peacekeeping requires a strong UN Security Council and funding... I support the role of women to participate in peace promotion,” the United Nations secretary general said.

“The international community is falling behind when it comes to accomplishing SDGs and climate change combat... More effort is needed to inhibit money smuggling and money laundering in the continent,” Guterres stated.
