CAIRO - 5 November 2018: Given that education is the number one way of building leaders, on the margins of the session titled, "How do we build future leaders?"that ended at 13:30 Monday, Egyptian Minister of Higher Education Khaled Abdelghafar and Minister of Education Tarek Shawky presented to President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi on the developments they have done recently.

The second edition of the conference, which holds the theme “peace and development”, has more than 5,000 delegates and participants from many nationalities and backgrounds. The closing will take place on November 6, 2018.

15:30

The session ended.

15:29

For the program to work, we need to believe in it, Sisi said.

15:27

We need to prepare our children for the future, Sisi said. We would be doing them wrong if we do not prepare them for the future, the Egyptian President explained.

15:21

"Take care of your countries. Take care of your countries. Countries are built with pain and sorrow. If someone takes a PhD from Harwavrd University, I will not say an Egyptian university, they will not work hard, lose wight, spend sleepless nights to succeed? They will," Sisi said.

15:12

I saw speaking to Abdelghafar and he told me that they need seven years to achieve the developmental goals, I replied saying, I cannot wait this long; this is too long, Sisi said.

15:10

About a month ago or maybe 20 days, I was talking to Shawky and I asked him how we can put measurements to ensure that we do this development in the shortest time possible. That we reach our goal as soon as possible, Sisi stated.

15:09

I am glad we got to show people the developments that we are making in education, Sisi said.

14:42

A video on the Presidential Leadership Program (PLP) was then aired.

14:41

Some people tell us that it took us a long time to taking the step to develop education, however, we needed to save the country from crumbling first, Sisi said.

14:40

I too really wanted the two ministers to present, Sisi said.

14:38

The moderator then addressed Sisi saying, I really wanted you to see this presentation.

"I am living in it," Sisi responded.

14:27

The ministries then showed a documentary video on the Egyptian universities in Egypt.

14:21

There are many challenges that face your programs, Sisi said.

14:19

We have also taken feedback from university students, said Abdelghafar. Then, a scoresheet was made and we will act according to the scoresheet.

14:13

The belief that we can change our belief as Egyptians to not just look to those who hold university degrees but also to those who have done training programs, Sisi stated.

14:12

We have agreed with Germans to give those who graduate from the car training programs a certificate from here but also from Germany. If they are satisfied with the level of the graduating students then they should not be to the standard of the Egyptian market only, they should be to international standards, Sisi said.

14:08

The question here becomes: Is university a place for education only? The answer is no, according to Abdelghafar, who speaks of student councils that are being established in universities to enable students to speak up and talk to institutions and organizations.

14:06

"We are expecting that Egyptian universities will go up in the world ranking very quickly," Shawky stated.

14:04

"Recently, in the world ranking, 19 Egyptian universities managed to be on the list of top 1,200 universities in the world," said Abdelghafar.

14:03

There are countries where the number of trained employees is declining; why can't Egypt be a partner for those people? We can provide for them people and we can also provide training education for them because we will have a great training system, explained Abdelghafar.

14:00

The educational systems take into account the changes that will happen to society.

13:55

"No two students will take the same subjects. Each student will take the subjects that are suitable for their talents; there will be compulsory courses and electives. The electives will prepare the student for what comes next for them," Shawky said.

13:48

Abdelghafar explained that the program they have built that strategies the development of education in Egypt has been drawn through studies by experts. The developments in the education program is also built to align with Egypt's 2030 Agenda.

13:38

The ministers then played a video for the audience that is aimed at students in primary school that explains the role of saliva. The videos are interactive, colourful and catchy.

13:35

The ministers played a video for the audience that shows how the heart works; the video is aimed at tenth graders.

13:35

Shawky spoke of the platform that the ministries have created for students to always have access to the information. This includes journals and videos and educational documentaries; gone are the days that students have to rely solely on books given to them from the ministry. Students will not have the chance to understand their lessons.

13:31

We want to find these talents early on so we can work on it, Shawky explained.

13:30

For those who are asking why we are changing the educational system, Shawky said, we are doing this because the old educational system did not really discover the talents of people. Some people have talents that are related to science but some have talents in the arts and music.

13:38

A leader has the potential to look for talents in his subordinates and only makes decisions after taking his or her time to study it very well, Abdelghafar said.

13:37

Building of a human being does not just mean education, it also means having the right environment, building one's personality, teaching them the right characteristics and so on, Abdelghafar explained.

13:34

Shawky then expressed his appreciation to the president and said that the dream that they presented him in 2016 is not on track and they are now building it.

Showing a picture from a school in Asyut and referring to it, the Education Minister said that in a mere 24 months, the government was able to build their dream and to achieve their goal.

13:33

When I visited schools recently, I felt that I am not scared for the children of today. I felt that they will be ready, Abdelghafar explained.

13:32

The new educational system aims to build the character of students to ensure that they are able to take responsibility and become active leaders, Abdelghafar said.

13:30

Abdelghafar started off the presentation by saying that they will present the way that the government will be developing the educational sector in Egypt over the next period.
