Italian parliament praises Egypt's transparency in Regeni's cae

CAIRO – 16 September 2018: Egyptian Speaker of the House of Representative, Ali Abdel Aal, met Sunday his Italian counterpart, Roberto Fico, to discuss the bilateral relations between Egypt and Italy in the light of the growing rapprochement between the two countries.

The meeting included members of the Egyptian parliament such as, the secretary general of Egypt’s Parliament, Ahmed Saadeddin, Deputy Speaker, Soliman Wahdan, and the heads of the parliament’s foreign affairs and National Security committees, Tarek Radwan and Kamal Amer.

Abdel Aal said that the Italian companies have a strong presence in the Egyptian market, on the top of them, Eni Gas Company, calling for more Italian investment in the promising Egyptian areas such Suez Canal Zone and the North Coast.

The Speaker suggested resuming the meetings of the Egyptian – Italian business council to boast the economic ties between both countries and provide their trade cooperation with a strong push.

Abdel Aal stressed that the Egyptian authorities give a high priority to the case of Giulio Regeni, an Italian graduate killed in Cairo two years ago. Abdel Aal added that Egypt cooperates with the concerned Italian bodies to end the mystery of Regeni’s murder.

On the other hand, the Italian President of the Chamber of Deputies, Roberto Fico praised the Egyptian efforts and transparency to find the truth behind the Italian student’s death.

Fico said that both countries have all the potential to promote their political, cultural and economic ties in the future.

Fico is an Italian politician and member of the Five Star Movement who has served as President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies since 24 March 2018.
