CAIRO – 30 July 2018: Bangladesh’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina met with the Egyptian Ambassador, Walid Shams, in Dhaka July 26, alongside her senior advisors and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss enhancement of mutual cooperation.

The Egyptian Ambassador passed on the president’s greetings and shared Egypt’s appreciation for the historical relations between the two countries.

The two look forward to increasing cooperation in all fields with the aim of serving mutual interests. They also discussed Egypt's support for Bangladesh in the humanitarian crisis regarding the displacement of more than one million people in the light of the Rohingya crisis.

The Prime Minister expressed her love and appreciation for Egypt. She pointed out Egypt’s prominent role in the wake of the Bangladeshi independence, referring to the former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s meeting with former leader Najib Al-Rahman, when 30 army tanks were given to the Bengali army.

Hasina thanked Egypt for its support to Bangladesh during the Rohingya crisis, as well as the humanitarian assistance it provided to mitigate the crisis last December.

She also pointed out that Bangladesh aspires to develop bilateral cooperation between the two countries by welcoming some Egyptian companies to invest within the country.

Hasina promised to facilitate all measures and overcome obstacles. With respect to the fight against terrorism, the Prime Minister stressed on benefiting from Egypt’s experience, especially after the success of the Egyptian army’s campaign to eliminate terrorist organizations in Northern Sinai.

Expressing her appreciation to Al-Azhar and the annual scholarships they give out to Bengali students, Hasina also explained the great importance behind spreading the central thought of Islam and countering radical thought.
