CAIRO - 18 April 2018: The leader of the terrorist organization in Central Sinai, Nasser Abu Zaqoul, was killed during an exchange of fire with the Third Field Army, according to the statement issued Wednesday by the military spokesman of the Armed Forces.

"The raid resulted in the killing of Nasser Abu Zaqoul, the leader of the terrorist organization in central Sinai, after intense fire exchange," said military spokesman Tamer al-Refaay.

The Third Field Army raided a number of rugged mountainous areas in Central Sinai where Abu Zaqoul was found with six automatic rifles, two hand grenades, a large amount of ammunition, and a radio communication device.

The raid comes as part of the two-month Comprehensive Operation Sinai 2018 to uproot terrorism from Northern and Central Sinai.

Nasser Abu Zaqoul is a leader of Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, the most dangerous terrorist organization in Sinai which is linked to a number of deadly attacks against security and military forces. Later, it changed its name to the so called the Islamic State (IS) in 2014.

Before joining the terrorist group, he was a sheepherder in Sinai; then he joined the terrorist Tawheed and Jihad group.

He was one of the terrorists that carried out 2005 Sharm El Sheikh bombings, which killed more than 80 victims from different nationalities.
