CAIRO – 12 April 2018: Egypt’s military prosecution referred former top auditor Hisham Geneina to the military court over his statement against the state and the army, ordering the first session of the trial to be on April 16.

Geneina was arrested on February 13 over the statement he made publicly that Sami Anan, the now arrested former presidential candidate, possesses secret documents against current leadership which he kept outside Egypt.

Geneina told the Haffpost Arabi, founded by Wadah Khanfar, the former CEO of Al-Jazeera media network, that Anan’s documents incriminate the country’s current leadership in the major events that happened following the 2011 January revolution and that they may be leaked in case Anan is harmed.

Anan Junior accused Geneina of slander and spreading false information on the behalf of his father. Nasser Amin, lawyer of Anan’s family, condemned Geneina’s statement, saying that all of the statements published contravene the truth and that he would take legal measures against Geneina.

Geneina was a leading member in Sami Anan’s presidential campaign; before the latter was excluded from the race over charges of breaking military codes by running for a political post without obtaining the necessary permissions, incitement against the army, and forgery of election documents.

Military spokesperson Tamer el-Refai said that the Egyptian army will investigate Geneina’s statements, saying that they drive a wedge between the Egyptian army and the citizens amid a war against terrorism. He added that the army will act according to the right granted to it by the constitution.
