UK parliament session to address Egypt's challenges, successes

LONDON - 8 April 2018: An All-Party Group (APG) on Egypt in the UK Parliament will organize on April 23 an important session under the title of "The Road to Democracy in Egypt" to address Egypt's challenges and successes over the past period.

General Coordinator of the APG Dr Samir Takla told MENA that the session is important as it comes in the wake of the presidential election and will shed light on the Egyptian people's determination and insistence to back President Abdel Faatah al-Sisi in spite of the tough economic decisions he had taken to continue the march of economic reform and raise the living standards of Egyptians.

During the session, well-known writer and intellectual, Tarek Heggy will address attendees as he will review the harsh conditions under which President Sisi has started his rule during his first term in office including the adverse economic conditions and regional instability, Tekla added.

APG Head Jonathan Lord is expected to preside over the session which will be attended by the group's members from the House of Lords, House Commons and a number of students and professors from several British universities, diplomats, media officials, businessmen and a number of intellectuals concerned with Egyptian affairs.

Formed in 2014, (APG) in the UK Parliament aims to promote ties between Egypt and Britain eight years after it was first dissolved due to a lack of financial support and interest from British MPs.

The 26 members of the APG come from different political parties across the UK Parliament's two chambers – the lower House of Commons and the upper House of Lords.

APGs are informal cross-party groups that have no official status within Parliament. They are essentially run by and for Members of the Commons and Lords.
