CAIRO – 8 January 2018: Lawyer of Iran's former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denied news about his arrest by the Iranian security forces on Sunday, according to Pan-Arab newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat on Sunday evening.

The London-based Daily Mail newspaper had reported on Sunday that the former president of Iran was arrested for inciting protests and chaos in the Islamic Republic.

"News about Ahmadinejad's arrest is false… Follow correct news from credible sources," Ahmadinejad's lawyer said.

On December 27, dozens of Iranian protesters took to the streets of Iran's second city of Mashhad Province to protest against economic stagnation and rising unemployment, as well as rising prices and corruption.

Protesters appeared to be complaining against high food prices and unemployment; however, the protests quickly evolved into expression of anger against Iran's clerical leadership, including President Hassan Rouhani who promised to revive the economy but, according to them, failed to do so.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protests in Tehran who were chanting slogans to bring down the theocracy; this is the most significant unrest in Iran in nearly a decade.

Although the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) said that at least 50 protesters have been shot and killed by the Revolutionary Guards, the official statistics reported the death of only 21 protesters.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) issued a statement on Friday stressing that the Iranian regime has blocked social networks in Iran since the first days of "the uprising", cutting off the internet completely in some areas and placing severe restrictions on it in others.
