CAIRO – 22 October 2017: Qatar’s hopes of having the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit solve its crisis with Arab states faded into disappointment Saturday after news spread that the summit may be postponed to April, Gulf sources spoke to Egypt Today anonymously.

The summit is held annually on a rotation basis in one of the members’ capitals and Kuwait was designated to host the one in December this year.

Diplomatic sources stated that Qatar’s Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani is eager to attend the GCC summit in order to give Qatari nationals the impression of stability and security inside the country. He is also willing to start dialogue with the boycotted countries as a pretext to overcome any threat to his throne.

"The Arab Quartet countries are aware of Qatar’s tricks, but the Quartet will not give Qatar the chance to falsify facts,” the sources added.

Qatar’s hopes that the meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz would contribute to ending the Arab boycott were also shattered.

It has been four months since the Qatari crisis erupted. On June 5, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain severed their ties with Qatar over accusations that Doha sponsors terrorist groups. They demanded that Doha halts funding to terrorists in the region and that the 13 conditions be met in order for dialogue to begin.
Arab quartet also closed off all points of entry for Qatari transportation.

During his speech on Thursday, from the podium of the 193-member United Nations General Assembly, Al-Thani renewed the call “for an unconditional dialogue based on mutual respect for sovereignty,” while directing strong criticism towards the four Arab countries.

In the coming period, the Arab Quartet will be handing over to international organizations documents submitted to the UN Security Council and the United Nations said to prove Qatar's involvement in supporting and financing terrorism.
