CAIRO - 28 July 2017: The Parliament is now tasked with converting the decisions of the National Council to Combat Terrorism and Extremism into legislation, Kamal Amer, the head of the Parliament’s committee of Defense and National Security said on Thursday.

The parliamentarian’s statement came following the presidential decree made on Thursday to form a council that aims to mobilize institutional and societal capacities to reduce the causes of terrorism and to address its effects.

In a similar context, Dar al-Iftaa praised the formation of the council and expressed that it will provide its full support, including issuing studies and any necessary information, to assist the success of the Council's efforts to eradicate the roots of terrorism.

The council will be headed by the president and will include a number of ministers, high-ranking officials and law makers.

The council will analyze and study the plans and ideologies of terrorist organizations, in addition to monitoring their activities.

It also aims to combat terrorism through a coordinated effort by all ministries and officials concerned with national security and will develop necessary strategies to eliminate extremism through intellectual, cultural, legal and security means.

It will also provide means to stop local and international sources of funding terrorist groups.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi first announced plans to form the counter-terrorist council in April in response to the Palm Sunday bombings that killed 48 people and injured dozens of others in Tanta and Alexandria.
