CAIRO – 25 July 2017: A leading member in the local militant group (Hasm) admitted Qatar and Turkey’s financial support to carry out terrorist acts in Egypt.

The Hasm member nicknamed as Hany Gamal, who was arrested recently by the Homeland Security Authority in Giza, revealed the group’s recruitment and training strategies that target youth in Egypt.

Gamal said that he has joined the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist group in Sharqia governorate since 2011, where he participated in riots conducted by the group against security forces.

He confessed that Hasm provided intensive three-phase training program for its members, including physical exercises, training on using weapons, creating and planting explosives, as well as using electronic communication systems at military camps in remote areas in the desert.

The little-known militant group has released in early January an eight-minute clip online showing its "military training" in a desert location, as well as graphic footage of its attacks on security forces.

Hasm has claimed responsibility for a number of attacks against Egyptian security personnel in recent months, mostly targeting police checkpoints.

Egyptian security forces have arrested and killed dozens of suspected Hasm members in the past few months.

Last February, an Egyptian court of urgent matters designated the militant group Hasm a terrorist organisation, banning its activity in the country.

In January, Egypt's High State Security Prosecution referred 304 people to military prosecution for membership in Hasm, which committed 14 attacks on security forces and public figures over the past six months.

Qatar’s relations with several Arab states have been strained since May 24 over a leaked statement attributed to Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, criticizing Gulf foreign policy with Iran, describing it as “unwise”.

Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad’s recent remarks in which he attacked Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) prompted the major Arab powers to adopt urgent and strict measures towards Doha.

The Qatari crisis was escalated when Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the UAE, along with Yemen and Libya announced a coordinated diplomatic break with Qatar, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. They also closed their airspace and seaports for Qatari transportation.
